EDUCATION AS A WHOLE
THE SCHOOL
by VINCENT J. MALONEY
Supervising Principal St. Albert Public Schools
In this article I propose to have a look at school buildings of the future as they may be, and propose reasons why our present concepts of school facilities must undergo sharp revisions.
In the last fifty years the Canadian scene has undergone immense changes. From a predominantly agricultural society, we have become primarily urban and industrial. Those fifty years have seen the invention and acceptance of the automobile, the moving picture, television, the airplane, the missile, the transistor, the electric computer, and the promise of space travel. The second industrial revolution of automation is already underway.
Certainly business and industry have been acutely aware of these vast changes in our society; in fact, have contributed toward them. How many businesses operate today as they did in 1900? Not only have they brought forth new products but have revolutionized their plants and merchandising techniques.
Tt is obvious that business and industry have learned to adjust to rapid, almost bewildering change. In 1900 they spent almost nothing on exploring new and better ways of doing their jobs. Today they spend billions on research alone.
How much money is spent today by our school systems on research to discover new and better ways to educate and house our children. Changes in education have been mainly in the realm of programme and not in bold exploration in new and better ways to teach and learn and build adaptable school buildings. How much experimentation is going on in Western Canada on new designs in schools? Robert C. Snider, the assistant executive secretary of the NEA's audio-visual department, ex- presses it this way, "In the United States since World War II, a very high level of technology has been reached in near- ly every area of human activity - with the possible exception of the schools and the railroad”.
Are schools in danger of becoming Stanley Steamers trying to operate in the world as it is today? Educators are now beginning to question the basic processes of the schools - the unassisted teacher, the boxlike classrooms, the fixed number of students, the lockstep of grades despite varying ability, the understacked libraries and the rarity of study Tooms. the lack of electronic equipment for individual students which is in use in only a few of our schools. Neon lights might do more than just illuminate our streets!
Some American designers have come up with schools which are a radical departure from the conventional. The design be-
low is not necessarily a good one but it is worthy of study. It is basically an attempt to provide a plant to implement new concepts in the teaching-learning process.
